Ruby saved her best biscuit for Dad. She put it in a tin and drew a star on the lid so nobody would mistake it for the others.

When Dad came home, he carried his bag into the kitchen without looking up. Ruby pushed the tin towards him. He reached for a plate.

'It's only one,' she said.

Dad paused, then fetched two small plates. He broke the biscuit carefully, giving Ruby the bigger piece.

She moved a crumb from her plate to his.

While they ate, Dad put his bag under the table. Ruby turned the lid so the star faced him.
