The Wrong Bank

On Friday, Maya and Ben were getting ready for the school play. Maya sent a quick message: ‘Bring the blue box and meet me by the bank at four.’ Inside the box were the hats for the final scene.

Maya meant the grassy bank beside the river, where their class was rehearsing, but Ben understood ‘bank’ as the building on the high street. At four, Maya waited by the water while Ben stood outside the closed building. The rehearsal began without the hats because Ben had taken the blue box to the wrong bank.

After ten minutes, Ben rang Maya. When they compared places, they laughed at the double meaning of ‘bank’. Ben hurried to the river, and the cast practised the final scene twice. That evening, every actor stepped on stage wearing the right hat.
